Product-led growth works as a self-reinforcing loop rather than a linear funnel: users sign up for free, experience core value quickly, convert to paid plans, and then invite colleagues who repeat the cycle, compounding growth without proportional increases in sales headcount or marketing spend.

- Built-in virality. Calendly hit 20 million users and a $3 billion valuation because every meeting link is a product demo.

PLG vs. sales-led growth
Product-led growth and sales-led growth differ primarily in how users first encounter and adopt the product: PLG lets users self-serve and experience value before paying, while sales-led growth routes prospects through demos and sales conversations, resulting in higher acquisition costs but potentially deeper enterprise relationships from day one.

Product-led growth isn't theoretical. Companies like Slack, Atlassian, and Figma grew to billions in revenue by making the product the primary acquisition channel, letting end users drive adoption from the bottom up rather than selling top-down through procurement teams and enterprise contracts.
- Slack filed its S-1 stating "organic growth is generated as users realize the benefits of Slack." They had 12 million daily active users and 156,000 business subscriptions before any enterprise push.
- Atlassian went public with zero traditional salesforce. Their S-1 reads: "users drive the adoption and proliferation of our products."
- Figma grew through collaboration. Every shared design file was a new user acquisition channel.
- Lovable hit $100 million ARR in eight months in 2025. Fastest any software company reached that milestone.
Why tours matter for PLG
Product tours are the activation mechanism that makes PLG work in practice. Signing up is easy. But average activation rates sit around 40% for single-user products and drop to 20% for multi-user tools (Statsig PLG metrics), meaning the majority of signups never reach the moment where they understand why your product exists.
Product tours fix this by shortening the path between "I just signed up" and "I get it." AB Tasty redesigned their onboarding with guided tours and saw tour completion jump from 2% to 15%. Free trial-to-PQL conversion went from 0% to 20%.
